Suspicions arose after the Asian pop star performed difficult stunts in ‘The Green Hornet’ despite his spinal chronic disease
Superstar Jay Chou's vigorous sideway kicks in The Green Hornet has raised eyebrows.
He was previously diagnosed with spinal chronic disease, which exempted him from the mandatory military duties in Taiwan.
In The Green Hornet, Jay portrayed Kato, a highly-skilled martial artiste, where he was thrashed around and had to perform numerous "shadowless" sideway kicks. This led to speculations from the public that Jay's illness was not as serious as it sounded.
The distributor of The Green Hornet, Sony Pictures said: "Jay has many action scenes in the movie. However, Hollywood movies often use stuntmen (body doubles) if the scenes are deemed too difficult or dangerous. They would not take the risk of endangering the actor."
"There are some dangers when filming in Hollywood. I would usually prefer to do my own stunts. Now I feel that if I could use a body double, I would let them do it. After all, they are more professional," Jay said at the press conference on Jan 27.
His company JVR added, "It is a fact that Jay has spinal chronic disease. He received an official letter [of exemption] from the military in 1999, before he became a celebrity. The doctor also said that with moderate care, patients like him are able to do stunts he did. Furthermore, Hollywood uses a lot of special effects."
