Van Ness Wu admits his poor Chinese on BWXXT

Since Van Ness Wu grew up abroad, he can only speak Chinese and can barely read it. Nonetheless, he courageously went on veteran host Chang Hsiao-Yen’s game show, BWXXT (Bai Wan Xiao Xue Tang, which is equivalent to Are You Smarter Than A 5th Grader). Van Ness revealed that he has been reading the Entertainment section of the newspaper every day in order to brush up on his Chinese, “I usually look at the pictures first before reading, and I can only understand forty percent of the content. I still need someone to be beside me and explain it in order to understand it fully.”

Van Ness moved to the United States when he was in grade two and English became his primary language. It was after he went back to Taiwan that he started to work hard in learning Chinese, but he expressed that he is not good with subjects that requires memorization, “Especially History, I don’t know why I just can’t memorize it. I’ve only started getting familiar with it after growing up.” On the other hand, he has a great interest in Art.

Right at the start of the recording, Van Ness immediately asked Chang Hsiao-Yen to assist him more with the questions. Despite Chang Hsiao-Yen was trying her best to give him hints, Van Ness still got the wrong answer, causing her to almost faint in disbelief. Van Ness got through four questions before leaving the stage.
