AKB48 to donate Y500 mil for quake victims

The management firm of Japanese all-girl pop group AKB48 said Tuesday that the group, along with its sister units and their producer Yasushi Akimoto, will donate a total of 500 million yen to assist people suffering as a result of last Friday’s catastrophic earthquake and tsunami in northeastern Japan.

AKS, the management firm, said some members of AKB48 members took the initiative, saying they wanted to do something to help.

After holding consultations with the Japanese Red Cross Society, they have decided to transfer the sum to new dedicated bank accounts that their fans can also use to donate money.

The accounts have been set up at Resona Bank’s Shibuya branch and the Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi UFJ’s Gotanda branch, both in Tokyo.

AKB48, a roughly 48-member group consisting of subgroups Team A, Team K and Team B, is one of the most popular ‘‘idol’’ groups in Japan. The group released a single titled ‘‘Beginner’’ last October, which had sold more than a million copies by late January.
